Weather Summary

Weather Underground Forecast for Wednesday, May 14, 2008.

In the Western Pacific, Rammasun, well east of Honshu will continue to move northeast and become an ex-tropical system on Wednesday. No direct threat is posed to any landmass.

In northern Asia, the low pressure system in the southern Sea of Japan will gradually move northward and weaken. Nevertheless, this system will bring light to moderate rain across northern Korean Peninsula and northern Japan. In addition, scattered light rain may fall in far northeastern China and southeastern Russia.

Farther south, high pressure is expected to build across southeastern China, Taiwan, southern Korea and southern Japan, providing partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures. Active tropical moisture will bring widely scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Philippines and southeastern Asia.

In Australia, a low pressure system will slowly move through the Great Australian Bight Wednesday. Since this system only has limited moisture to work with, expect rain to remain mainly isolated over southern South Australia. On the other hand, moist onshore flow will keep widespread rain showers going across southern Western Australia. Moving to the east coast, a few showers and thunderstorms are expected over the coast. Otherwise, mostly sunny and mild weather is in store for the region.

May 2008: month of the natural disaster

Dr. Jeff Masters

We live on a dangerous planet. In the wake of Cyclone Nargis, one of the deadliest tropical cyclones of all time, China's worst earthquake in 32 years has struck just 12 days later. Rarely in recorded history have twin natural disasters claiming 10,000 or more lives struck so close to each other in time. The last such occurrence I could find was in China in 1931. That summer, the world's deadliest natural disaster of all time--the Yellow River Flood of 1931--killed b...

Weather History:

Did you know that...

A couple incredible hail facts occurred on this date. First, in 1975, hail the size of tennis balls amassed to a depth of 10 inches in Wernersville, Penn. Also, in 1930, a farmer was killed in a hailstorm near Lubbock, Texas accounting for the only official United States death due to hail.
